On Friday, April 5 through Tuesday, April 9, every night Olivia Rodrigo performed part of her discography in front of thousands of fans at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. This is Rodrigo’s second tour, with the first tour showcasing her debut album “Sour.” Across the twenty-two songs she sings, the attendees are put through a dynamic journey of love, loss, and learning.
Each night, the rock band “The Breeders” opened for Rodrigo running about 40 minutes before her performance. At the beginning of the tour, Chappell Roan opened for Rodrigo. The performances in New York were the first time of the tour where “The Breeders” started for Rodrigo.
As the time came for Rodrigo to perform, purple candles spelling out “GUTS” were displayed on the screen, which melted as her appearance on stage etched closer and closer. To match the electric anticipation of the concert, Rodrigo first performed one of her hit singles, “bad idea, right?”
Throughout the next ninety -five minutes, Rodrigo played a mix of songs from her debut and second studio albums. Additionally, as a surprise, Rodrigo sang “Can’t Catch Me Now,” which is a single she wrote for the most recent Hunger Games movie, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.”
Rodrigo’s captivating and strong vocals did not ebb during the show, which carried the act all together. Never being one to shy away from a belt, Rodrigo delivered each note melodiously.
Not to mention, the aesthetics of the show were on par. The enchanting lights and fitting props keep a deliberate theme and balance of, firstly, the chaos that is typically found during the formative years of one’s life. Secondly, amongst the chaos, there is also peace found in the setlist which is reflected in the quiet songs where the lights dim, and for a moment all that is present is Rodrigo’s lyrics.
Rodrigo’s performances aren’t one to forget. The abundance of joy and healing provided by her songs make for an unforgettable experience. From her lyrical genius to the funky choreography and even the edgy outfits, the “GUTS World Tour” is a must-see for anyone looking for a fun time.
