Unlike the frigid temperatures of January and February, March showed glimpses of beautiful weather and sunshine. As the weather begins to shift, so does my music taste, going from somber and simple songs to luscious and lively ones. This month was a significant one for me as well, as I celebrated my birthday and received my driver’s license during March, both of which contributed immensely to my music selection this month. Based on my music listening experience from this past month, here are some of my top songs from the month of March that I highly recommend.
Five: “Domino” by Jessie J
Since I received my driver’s license, I’ve dove into the genre of “early 2010s pop music” to bring some energy and life into my trips to the store or the gym. “Domino” by Jessie J is the perfect song to pump that energy and life into my day, as well it’s the perfect song to throw on with friends in the car to sing along to. Anyone can appreciate the infectious rhythm and feeling that “Domino” has, and as a music listener who values the way a song sounds over the lyrics, “Domino” fits perfectly into my daily rotation. Anytime I need a pick-me-up in between class periods, I know I can count on “Domino” to give me a boost to conquer my next task.
Four: “This Love” by Maroon 5
What happened to Maroon 5? Once a consistent band with a solidified music style and direction, turned to one that cannot find its style and favors quantity over quality at this moment. “Songs About Jane” is a good album from the band, with the likes of “She Will Be Loved”, “Sunday Morning”, and especially “This Love” being standouts to me. I enjoy the guitar and drum based instrumental that progresses over the course of the song, and with Adam Levine’s varying vocal delivery “This Love” has become one of my favorite songs from “Songs About Jane”.
Three: “Diva (feat. Lil Tecca)” by The Kid LAROI
“Diva” is a huge throwback to middle school, and even though this song was released only four years ago, it still brings back countless memories. When I listen to “Diva” I’m reminded of the walks home from school while chatting with my friend group, the bike rides during quarantine, and late nights playing Xbox with my friends. The simple yet playful nature of this song gets me moving every time, especially when both The Kid LAROI and Lil Tecca’s energy and vocal delivery perfectly pair with the upbeat instrumental.
Two: “You Rock My World” by Michael Jackson
In all honesty, I never thought I’d be listening to a Michael Jackson song in 2024. Not that I don’t like his music or appreciate it, I wouldn’t have thought that I’d be listening to “You Rock My World” more than the upper-echelon of Michael Jackson like “Thriller” or “Beat It”. I can’t recall where I heard this song during the month of March but I’m very glad I did, as Michael Jackson’s vocal delivery and energy is like no other. His delivery and energy paired with such a vibrant instrumental makes for a magical listening experience. Regardless of the time or place, anytime I hear “You Rock My World” I can’t help but dance and sing my heart out.
One: “Sore Throat” by Malcolm Todd
What a surprise, yet another Malcolm Todd song was my most listened to song of the month. Todd has simply been on a masterful run of releasing excellently groovy music that scratches the itch that I have for this type of music. After teasing “Sore Throat” for several weeks as began his rollout of the Sweet Boy EP collection, Todd released the song alongside his Sweet Boy Pt. 2 EP. Once it was released, I couldn’t stop listening to it due to its infectiously smooth chorus and vocal delivery from Todd. Although he doesn’t change his lyrical focus to other topics other than relationships, I’m still here for anything Todd is willing to release because of his ability to deliver on various instrumentals.
I hope my selections can help expand and diversify your music taste, and I’m looking forward to listening to more music as the year progresses.
