On Monday, Jan. 22, Jonathan Fletcher took over for Social Studies teacher Rebecca DiBrienza who went on maternity leave. He will be teaching her courses for the remainder of the year. While Fletcher may be new to the classroom environment, he has been coaching football at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School for five years.
Fletcher has 32 years of teaching experience prior to coming to SPFHS. He most recently taught at Morristown High School before retiring in January. Fletcher noted some of the major differences and similarities between SPFHS and his previous workplace.
“The building layout is the main difference, but what I’ve remarked to my wife about is how similar it all is,” Fletcher told The Fanscotian. “[There is] not a radical difference in terms of teaching, learning and conducting a class.”
Upon his arrival, Fletcher introduced himself to the class, giving them some of his history and personal background. He recognizes that switching teachers in the middle of the year is not always easy, but wants to ensure the smoothest transition possible for his students.
“I made myself into a human being instead of this new creature,” Fletcher said. “The funny part is Mrs. DiBrienza was my student at Morristown High. I think that puts the kids a little bit at ease.”
Fletcher noted the politeness of everyone at SPFHS, both in the students and the faculty. He is excited to be a part of the school community and truly do what he is passionate about.
“[The school] is very willing here to let people do what they’re good at, as opposed to micromanaging,” Fletcher said. “[All teachers] have ideas of how things should be done and it seems to be so far that they are allowing me to do it my way and be myself.”
While Fletcher doesn’t know many people outside of the football department and athletics, he is looking forward to meeting new teachers and students within the school.
