On December 22, 2023, Sony Pictures released the romantic comedy, “Anyone but You” in theaters.
Directed by Will Gluck, this movie starred Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. Sweeney is best known for her role as Cassie Howard on HBO’s “Euphoria.” Powell has been in many films, most recently including “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Set It Up” and “Devotion.”
Bea (Sweeney), a Boston University Law student, seems lost in all aspects of her life. As she recovers from a recent breakup and questions her career path, Bea just wants to avoid one thing: disappointing her parents. Ben (Powell), works in finance and is a master in the dating world, but very naive when it comes to settling down. He doesn’t know how to be in a real relationship and to some extent, he even fears it.
After meeting in a coffee shop, Bea and Ben spend the most perfect evening together. The two seem head-over-heels for each other until everything takes a turn for the worse the next morning. While Bea and Ben hope to never see each other again, months later they coincidentally reunite at a restaurant, where they learn that Bea’s sister and Ben’s best friend are getting married.
Now, Bea and Ben must find a way to not only survive the destination wedding in Australia together but also learn to enjoy each other’s company (at least while others are watching).
Like every Rom-com, this film was predictable but very entertaining. During certain scenes, such as the character’s reenactment of “The Titanic,” the entire audience burst into laughter.
The film also utilized fun and catchy music, including Ben’s “serenity song,” the pop classic “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield.
This song quite literally left viewers dancing out of the theaters. With captions such as “Mood after ‘Anyone But You’” and “POV: you just watched ‘Anyone But You’” teenagers across the nation have posted TikTok videos of them skipping and dancing out of the theater to express how much they enjoyed the movie.
If you have enjoyed watching movies like “10 Things I Hate About You” and “The Proposal,” I highly recommend checking out “Anyone But You.”
