On Friday, Dec. 1, at 7 p.m., six contestants Ian Hobbs, Graham Kois, Tim Ennis, Evan Doyle, Tony Chrisostomides and Colin McAuliffe showcased their hidden talents on stage in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School auditorium to be crowned the next Mr. Spiffy High.
The annual Mr. Spiffy High competition is held by advisor Marjorie Fitzgibbon and leaders of the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), where senior boys entertain the crowd and SPFHS staff judges through rounds of fashion, talent and lip-sync. Escorts collect money in jars throughout the show to add to the contestants’ scores.
The show kicked off with the six dancing to “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls.
Participants walked on stage with senior girl escorts to individually present themselves to the audience. They each answered one pageant question after showing off their attire.
During the next two rounds, contestants performed a skit and lip synced to a song of their choosing.
Before the crowning, the boys danced to “He Could Be The One” by Hannah Montana.
“Mr. Helen Street” Evan Doyle was crowned Mr. Spiffy High after winning by one point.
“It was a great experience, nothing like I’ve ever experienced [before]. I’ve never done anything in front of a crowd that large,” Doyle said.
The money raised through ticket sales and donations went to the Mental Health Association of New Jersey. The non-profit organization strives to help children and adults that are affected by mental illness and substance abuse disorders.
The event raised over $5,000 dollars and Doyle raised the most out of the contestants with $800.
