With marching band over for the season, members of the band find solace in other music options in our school system (jazz band, concert band, moonglowers). But for Color Guard, Winter Guard helps them find an opportunity to perform and maintain their skills.
Winter Guard is akin to a Marching Band show, but is performed indoors with the formatting of a dance team. Performers spin flags, rifles, and sabres to a song, telling a story through their movements.
“I think it’s important to have a place to get good. In winter, you improve pretty quickly, because your focus is you, not the band,” sophomore Samantha Hale told The Fanscotian.
She’s been in Winter Guard since her freshman year, and she’s never regretted a moment of it.
2023’s show was called “Just One Night”. Which involved a 20s themed dance, with a high beat, and movements reminiscent of a jazz party. Featured were moves like the Charleston, and an emphasis on rifle and saber skills that the performers developed just for that show, like saber tosses back and forth between people.
“Winter Guard has a lot of cool exchanges and rifle tosses. It’s awesome to get the chance to change things up. It’s fun to learn new skills, and then you get more to add to your show, and that makes it more of a fun show.” Hale said.
While it is not yet known what the 2024 show will be, we know it will be just as thrilling and fun as before.
