On September 26, 2023, SPF’s new addition, Women’s Health Club, held their interest meeting for anyone wanting to learn more about women and healthcare.
The goal of Women’s Health Club is to not only raise awareness for women’s health, but to also educate the SPF community about these topics. These include breast cancer, women’s mental health (body positivity and self-love), period poverty, healthcare inequality, menstruation, pioneering women in medicine and more.
“We noticed that there was a lack of women’s health-related activities in SPF, so we wanted something that was a little bit more specific and women’s health is a big topic,” junior Sophia Labazzo said.“We wanted to create a club that was centered around that and could target the girls in our school.”
Women’s Health Club hopes to bring future female doctors together who can help to empower young women.
“We decided to start this club to raise awareness for breast cancer… and also for women working in healthcare,” junior Madeline Coyle said.
At the interest meeting, future events were discussed, such as hosting an event during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“There’s a lot of things that women go through that aren’t really looked at and seen by the public; they’re kind of hidden and not really talked about,” junior Lacey Greene said.
Together, Labazzo, Coyle and Greene hope to make a difference for women at SPF.
