Senior alarms rang early last Tuesday, Sept. 12, waking them up for the senior sunrise at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. This event is a yearly tradition for the new senior class. They woke up bright and early to catch the sunrise at the Perry Tyson football field. The viewing went from 6-7 a.m.
Seniors wore pajamas and brought blankets and chairs to cozy up and watch the sunrise. Some students reported that they woke up as early as 4:45 a.m. to get ready. Many students left to get breakfast to eat as the viewing continued.
The turnout was decent, an estimated 100 people showed up. Football fields are enormous, leaving plenty of room for everyone to lay out, and relax.
“I’ve seen better sunrises, but it was fun,” SPFHS senior Rebecca Wofsy told The Fanscotian.
How the sky looks is very subjective to the viewer’s eye, but there was an overall disappointment with it last Tuesday morning. Some clouds occupied the sky, covering the hues of the morning sun.
This tradition is one for the memories, but there’s also a deeper meaning to it. The sunrise opens the year, and the senior sunset closes it, signifying the end of the senior’s time at the high school.
“[The sunrise] is supposed to be symbolic, like at the start of the year,” said Student Government Association Representative Emily Park. “Then at the end of the year, we have senior sunset. It’s a metaphorical thing.”
