The Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School (SPFHS) Marching Band was honored by the SPF Board of Education on Thursday, Nov. 15, 2019, at 8 pm.
After the meeting was called in session and a brief discussion on the economics of the district had been finalized, Superintendent Dr. Joan Mast introduced the Marching Band and Colorguard.
“If you have the opportunity to see [the band] on the field as they start in the summer, as the season goes when you see them at the competitions in October, you see that the growth is notable, amazing and certainly reflects hard work that rivals any of our well-performed athletic teams,” Mast said.
Durand Thomas spoke as the director of the Marching Band. He noted the hard work of the ensemble and perseverance throughout the season and previous seasons as well. Not only did Thomas speak on the hard work during this season, but others as well.
“Though these students have only been here for four, three, two or one years, certainly we have had our own original shows,” Thomas said. “Certainly there are shows that we are quite proud of and shows that were not as on point as we would have liked them to be.”
Colorguard Director, Jaclyn Tumolo and the Head of Percussion, John Gillick built on what Thomas said, once again recounting the pride they hold in their students and the show the band produced.
“This season has been nothing short of amazing, inspirational and motivational,” Tumolo said. “These kids have worked so hard since day one.”
The speakers thanked the students for the work they put into the activity. The details of the season were included in the recognition presented to the board in a resolution.
The record of the Marching Band and Colorguard for the 2019 season was included along with awards received that were not earned through the score they received, but the overall vibrancy of the group.
At the end of this portion of the meeting, the Board of Education unanimously voted to pass the resolution and celebrate the SPFHS 2019-2020 Marching Band and Colorguard.
