Among his noticeable glasses, gargantuan costumes, and onstage antics, Elton John was always a prominent figure in the music world. Now, his story is coming to the big screen with the latest music biopic Rocketman, starring Taron Egerton as John, offering an insight into John’s childhood, relationships, rise to fame, and songwriting process.
The movie also features prominent figures in John’s life and career such as songwriter Bernie Taupin (played by Jamie Bell) and manager John Reid (played by Richard Madden). Egerton is able to fully embody John, especially through his signature haircuts, glasses, and outfits.
Rocketman is an enjoyable movie for those who are familiar with John’s career and music. However, if not, while still enjoyable, the film is difficult to follow. This is due to the fact that there are many different storytelling elements in the film – fantastical, musical numbers, flashbacks, and narration. Following in the footsteps of other recently released music biopics such as Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody and Mötley Crüe’s The Dirt, Rocketman does a good job of introducing John’s career while also including many of his greatest hits, including Your Song, Rocketman, Tiny Dancer, Bennie and the Jets, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and many more.
