With the recent successful release of “Us” the new Jordan Peele movie regarding a family whose house is broken into by their doppelgängers, the horror genre has become a front of line topic once again. Thankfully, 2019 is only just beginning to release their predictable key horror movies, with many more to come.
The Curse of La Llorona
The sixth installment in The Conjuring universe, legendary horror producer James Wan is back at it again. The Curse of La Llorona centers around La Llorona, a ghost in Mexican folklore who drowned her children and subsequently cries while looking for them near the river, often causing havoc. The movie stars Linda Cardellini as a social worker who soon believes that La Llorona has attached herself to her. Though receiving rightful criticism for having a white lead in a movie centered around Mexican folklore, the personification of La Llorona in the mind of James Wan is sure to be original and interesting as always. Patricia Velásquez and Marisol Ramirez also star. The Curse of La Llorona is set to be released on April 19th.
Ma
If you saw Us in theaters, you might’ve seen the trailer for Ma, a story that starts as every teens dream subsequently turning into their worst nightmare. Ma stars Octavia Spencer as the titular character Ma, a middle aged woman who allows a group of teenagers to party at her house. However, things turn dark when the teens begin to see through Ma and recognize her true intentions. Ma is set to be released on May 31st.
Midsommar
Fans of Hereditary, the horror hit revolving around a family unraveling their terrifying inheritance, might’ve already heard about this new movie, as Midsommar and Hereditary share the same director, newcomer Ari Aster. Midsommar, starring Florence Pugh, Will Poulter, and William Jackson Harper, illustrates the experience of a couple who travels to Sweden to visit their friends hometown for its famed festival, before realizing that the festival is actually a violent competition at the hands of a pagan cult. Midsommar is set to be released on July 3rd.
