On Mar. 15, it was officially announced that security guard and track coach Rich McGriff had been named Coach of the Year for Boys Winter Track. The organization that announced the award, NJ.com, focuses on sports from high schools in the state. Writers also update news from around the world, and even post updates about the weather.

“…I was grateful to have [the award]… you have a level of pride for getting nominated and receiving an award like that…” McGriff said.

McGriff has volunteered at the district, more specifically the high school, since 1991. He has been coaching track and field at SPFHS since 1993. He was given the award this year because of how well the team performed during the winter of 2018-19, winning the Group 3 relay championships and winning the Group 3 title for the first time in program history.

“…It was really a team effort…you have to have that pride, also for the whole team and the whole staff.” McGriff said.

Though he very much deserves the award, McGriff selflessly insisted that his fellow track coaches and student-athletes were the reason that he won the award. “…Reporters that are following track and field chose me as the coach of the year for winter track… based off of the performance of the team, it’s more so just recognizing how well the team has done…” McGriff said.
