On Thursday, Mar. 14, over 60 senior citizens from all over the Scotch Plains-Fanwood area visited Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School for Senior Citizens Day. For this event, local senior citizens are invited to the school for a day of festivities with students.
To begin the day, each student was paired with one or more of the attendees to spend the day with. The students and seniors both were able to ask questions and bond with one another. Some of the seniors that visited were even alumni of SPFHS.
“I’m really glad I was able to help out with Senior Citizens Day because it’s always nice to put yourself out there and do something fulfilling,” junior volunteer Lindsey Porchetta said.
Throughout the day, there were multiple activities to participate in and enjoy. For musical entertainment, the seniors were delighted by performances from the Moonglowers and the cast of the spring musical, “Mamma Mia”. In addition, both the step team and cheerleading team showcased their skills for the group. There were also spirited games of bingo throughout the event. The seniors were treated to a complimentary lunch alongside their paired students.
“Senior Citizens Day was a lot of fun because we were able to talk with the seniors about their lives and help them through the events,” junior volunteer Julie Ciccarino said.
This event is extremely worthwhile and will be continued as a tradition at SPFHS for many years to come.
