One year ago on Feb. 14, 2018, 17 people were killed during the school day in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School located in Parkland, Florida. This shooting sparked the “March For Our Lives” movement which addresses the gun violence issues that are happening all across the United States and to prevent anymore shootings from happening.
“The Parkland shooting incident has changed our society because many students from Parkland now have made an organization called March for Our Lives which has brought many students around the US closer together in order to make a change,” Maddie StaRosa, sophomore at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, said.
On Thursday people gathered nationwide to commemorate and remember those who lost their lives in the shooting. Students who attend Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School had a day called “Day of Service and Love” dedicated to remembering the 17 lives that were lost during the shooting last year.
“It is important to remember the Parkland shooting because it was one of the deadliest mass school shootings in modern US history and the 17 lives that were taken that day in a place where students and teachers are supposed to be safe,” StaRosa said.
During that day the school held many different services for the student body to participate in such as serving breakfast to first responders and to pack meals for children who don’t receive a proper meal everyday. Furthermore, they had therapy dogs and counselors on school grounds to help the students through the day.
Broward County Public Schools held a moment of silence at 10:17 a.m. in honor of the 17 victims who were shot and killed and the other 17 people who were injured. To further remember them the student body wore their signature burgundy shirts that read #MSDStrong.
It has only been one year since the Parkland shooting and since then a large number of people have united together to prevent future shootings in schools and elsewhere. So much has changed in the last year and those 17 people and every other person who was hurt or killed by the hundreds of shootings that occurred in 2018 will forever be remembered.
