The Fanwood Borough Council voted on Nov. 18 to approve the design and construction of a skateboarding facility at Forest Road Park, replacing a closed hockey rink that had fallen into disrepair over the last few years.
The skate park is estimated to cost $124,000 and will be funded by the Fanwood Recreation Commission and a grant from Union County. The park is expected to be completed within the coming year.
Teenagers who skate in the area, including several high school students, attended the council meeting to voice their support of the plan.
“The officials liked that even though we are only 15 or 16, we could come out and give factual information and voice our opinions in a civil manner,” said sophomore Zakary Miller, one of the skate park advocates.
